Mountain Lion Sightings in Canyon

mountain-lion-portrait There have been several sightings of a young mountain lion in the area. Remember, if you encounter a mountain lion, do not run. Instead, face the animal, make lots of noise and try to look bigger by waving your arms and throw rocks or objects to scare it away. If attacked, fight back.

The Pasadena Humane Society has posted a Mountain Lion Awareness flier and the City of Glendale has created a wildlife sighting website where you can see and post sightings of different types of wildlife in the city. The site is relatively new so there are not many postings yet. You can read more about this website in this article by the Glendale News Press: http://articles.glendalenewspress.com/2013-06-06/news/tn-gnp-mountain-lion-spotted-in-glendale-neighborhoods-20130606_1_mountain-lion-rossmoyne-wildlife-sightings

Local Artist Seeking Interest in Canyon Art Show

Bud Breaking Poppies at Zaca MesaCanyon resident and local artist, Nancy Wise and her husband Randy are wondering if there would be any interest in organizing a Glenoaks Canyon Art Show featuring artistic talent from our beautiful canyon. A professional artist, Nancy has been creating art for over 45 years and has lived in the canyon with her husband for the last 25 years.

Nancy is trying to gauge what kind of interest there would be in an event like this. If you are interested in possibly seeing something like this in the future, please email Nancy at nancy@winecountryartist.com.

Please note, at this time, this is not a GOCHA sponsored event.

So. Cal. Gas Co. Presentation on New Digital Metering Program

socalgasThe Gas Co. is about to roll out installation of digital transmitters that will work with your existing gas meters transmitting gas usage to their central office. This will work much like the new water meters that have already been installed throughout the area. Notices will be going out first quarter of this year prior to installation dates. In addition, the Gas Co. will also be installing transmitter/receivers on top of pre-existing light fixtures along Glenoaks Blvd. in the canyon. For further information, take a look at the presentation the Gas Co. gave last October attached here.

City Council Passes Glendale Bicycle Safety Plan

On March 27th, the City Council passed the Glendale Bicycle Safety Plan. This affects our canyon in that as part of the street resurfacing project [see: Glenoaks Blvd. Rehabilitation Meeting Notes] the city will be painting bike lanes and sharrows markers in the canyon upon completion of resurfacing. Below is a summary of what this means for our canyon.

Here is what the plan proposes:

From Chevy Chase to Mt. Carmel

Current 46' wide 2 lanes with on-street parking

Proposed 46' wide 2 lanes with on-street parking 6' bike lanes 7' wide parking lanes 10' wide travel lanes

From Mt. Carmel to Scholl Dr.

Current 46' wide 2 lanes with on-street parking 9.5' center turn lane 8' parking lanes 10' 3" travel lanes

Proposed 46' wide 2 lanes with on-street parking Remove center turn lane 7' parking lanes 6' bike lanes 10' travel lanes

From Scholl Dr. to Scholl Canyon Park Entrance

Current 40' wide 2 lanes with on-street parking 4' center painted median 7' parking lanes 11' driving lanes

Proposed 40' wide 2 lanes with on-street parking Remove center painted median 7' parking lanes 13' travel lanes with sharrows (see below for an explanation of what a "sharrow" is)

From Scholl Canyon Park Entrance to Tennis Courts

Current 40' wide 2 lanes with parking only from 6am to 10:30pm 6' wide painted lines, no bike lane markings

Proposed 40' wide 2 lanes with parking only from 6am to 10:30pm Stencil and sign existing stripes to create bike lane

A "sharrow" is a shared bike lane. Signified by the symbol:

The stated purposes of the shared-lane markings used in California are to:

  • Assist bicyclists with lateral positioning in a shared lane with on-street parallel parking in order to reduce the chance of a bicyclist’s impacting the open door of a parked vehicle;
  • Assist bicyclists with lateral positioning in lanes that are too narrow for a motor vehicle and a bicycle to travel side by side within the same traffic lane;
  • Alert motorists of the lateral location bicyclists are likely to occupy within the traveled way;
  • Encourage safe passing of bicyclists by motorists; and
  • Reduce the incidence of wrong-way bicycling.
