New LTE Cell Tower Being Proposed at Scholl Canyon Landfill

Apologies for the last minute post, but today, May 12, 2020 at 6:00pm there will be a virtual meeting held by the Los Angeles Regional Interoperable Communications System (LA-RICS) to discuss the construction of the proposed cell tower. This is not a City of Glendale project and does not require approval of the City Council. LA-RICS is inviting the public to join the meeting to find out more about this initiative.

It does appear that the proposed cell tower will be seen from parts of our canyon. The presentation does not say what cellular companies will take advantage of this tower. Hopefully that will be discussed in the meeting tonight.

Safety Alert: Kidde Fire Extinguisher Recall

Watching the devastating fires that have been ravaging Southern California over the last month is a constant reminder of how vigilant we must be in our beautiful canyon. Fire safety is of the utmost importance to all of us.

That is why GOCHA wants to alert you to a massive recall on Kidde fire extinguishers. This recall affects almost 38 million fire extinguishers manufactured between 1973 and 2017. The fire extinguishers can become clogged or require excessive force to discharge and can fail to activate during a fire emergency. In addition, the nozzle can detach with enough force to pose an impact hazard.

Please check to see if you need to replace your fire extinguishers. If you ever need them, you want to know that they are working.

The Canyon's Disaster Preparedness Program Come listen to Isabel Meyer discuss the details of the Canyon's Disaster Preparedness Program. The Glendale Fire Department and Glendale Police Department will also be present to discuss how their efforts will dovetail with the Canyon's in the event of a fire or natural disaster.

The Scholl Canyon Landfill City Manager Scott Ochoa and Council Member Vartan Gharpetian have graciously offered to speak at our meeting to share with us the current status of affairs with the landfill.

Dump Dangers Informational Meeting Monday 11/9

Please join us for an informational meeting to learn about concerns Dr. Clarence Hall, Geologist and UCLA Professor Emeritus, has about the Scholl Canyon Landfill, its possible expansion and the EIR report that is slated to go before Glendale City Council for approval this coming January.

Is the landfill built on solid granite?

Are all the earthquake faults included in the EIR? 

Are the barriers that collect toxic waste being monitored regularly?

These questions and more will be discussed at this meeting Monday, November 9th at 7:00pm at the Joe Bridges Clubhouse.

Scholl Canyon Landfill Press Conference 8/20/14 9:00 am

Wednesday morning (August 20, 2014 - sorry for the late notice), there will be a press conference organized by Eagle Rock community representatives and LA City Councilmember Jose Huizar who oppose the expansion of the Scholl Canyon landfill. The press conference will be held from 9:00 - 9:45am at Richard Alatorre Park at Figueroa Blvd. and Scholl Canyon Rd. just north of the 134 freeway.

The press conference has been organized to express opposition to the expansion plans for the landfill and to raise concerns about Glendale’s draft Environmental Impact Report which documents significant unavoidable adverse impacts related to the proposed expansion, particularly on local air quality.

If you are at all concerned about the landfill expansion or just want to hear more about it, Wednesday’s press conference should be informative. Please see attached Media Advisory for more information.

City Extends Landfill Expansion Public Comment Period

Due to the overwhelming turnout at the May 19th meeting held at the Joe Bridges Clubhouse, the city has decided to extend the public comment period to July 31st in order for everyone to have a chance to have their opinion heard. In an email written to GOCHA President David Weeks, General Manager of Public Works Steve Zurn said that it was important to give residents a chance to have their opinions heard and therefore the city is extending the public comment period by 60 days. This will give residents more time to digest the Environmental Impact Report and comment. If you would like to have your voice heard, please take the time to look at the report and let the city know your opinion.

All comments must be submitted in writing to the Sanitation Districts (Attention: Ms. Debra Bogdanoff) at 1955 Workman Mill Road, Whittier, CA 90601 or by email at sclfeir@lacsd.org no later than July 31, 2014. Any comments provided should identify specific environmental concerns related to the proposed project.
